Over a year ago, I applied for App Academy. I was accepted, the course was altered/postponed and all students were re-selected. Unfortunately, I didn’t make the second cut. It left me with a sour taste and I was discouraged, to say the least.

About a month or so after, I got myself back in teaching myself programming, focusing on Javascript. Last month, I applied for Hack Reactor (www.hackreactor), without thinking much about it.

Two interviews and a take home project later, I was accepted into their class, starting on August 2nd. I’m super excited for this change, but at the same time terrified. Life as I currently know it will come to complete halt until the class is done.

It goes without saying that this class also costs a lot of money - a lot of it which I don’t have. To help fund this, I’ll be selling off a majority (almost all) of my records. Don’t get me wrong - I love my collection. But in the end, records are records. It’s all just material possessions and if selling them means that I’m able to take advantage of a new opportunity, then so be it.

Despise You / Crom - Split (1995, Theologian / Pessimiser Records)

There’s one word that can legitimately describe Despise You - brutal. I know that word is overused for most bands, but there isn’t much a better term for this band. Crom’s side of the insert is pretty awesome, though that’s all I can really say about them for this split.

Remember the first time you heard Dillinger Escape Plan, especially if you heard them before all of the shitty knockoffs occurred? I first heard “Abe the Cop” from the 1999 Relapse Sampler, which totally blew me away. I’m just glad I was able to see before Dimitri left, even though he always seemed to be the odd man out when they played. Looking back, the show I saw them at was pretty ridiculous - Candiria, Dillinger Escape Plan and Isis at the Trocadero in Philadelphia.

Found this gem in the $1 bin at Amoeba in SF. Defeatist easily became one of my recent favorite grindcore bands, mainly because of their traditional take on the sound - raw, fast, loud and not too technical. Stallings was also a madman on drums and this should come as no surprise considering his history in Anodyne.

Deadbodieseverywhere / Utter Bastard - Split (1997, 625 Thrashcore, Mere Existence)

Sloppy late-90’s grindcore by these two, with my preference going towards Deadbodieseverywhere. I just can’t get into Utter Bastard’s vocals or some of their riffs. Kind of a ‘meh’ release, I mainly picked it up because DBE. Pete Benumb also does vocals on some of the DBE tracks, which is pretty killer.

Cretin - Cretanic Grind Ambush (2004, Relapse Records) Grey Marble, Ltd. 450.

Repulsion worship at it’s finest. I was pretty stoked for this release when I read that it was ex/current members of Exhumed. I like this 7” a lot more than the “Freakery” full length and I think this is mainly due to the recording of the 7” vs the full length.
